I remember the day when I was about to be  

Age 13 going on 33  

You took me up between your knees  

And you said, “Baby you know Me-Maw loves you”  

I shook my head up and down  

You smiled and hugged me all around  

And you said, “Child there is one thing I must tell you.”  

I listened still to your strong, stern voice  

As you spoke about a thing called choice  

And you said, “Girl there is going to be many trials.”  

My head dropped in reverent fear  

To accept wise words upon my ear  

As you said, “Young lady don’t ever do anything you can’t do on  

A bicycle
