Prodigal 1

Prodigal 2

The idiom “prodigal son”

If we just look at the definition of the word prodigal we see a “reckless, extravagant spender”.   As a Christian all my life I heard the term prodigal son based on the parable Jesus gives in Luke chapter 15.  This chapter in Luke begins as many with the “religious” of the day confronting Jesus in reference to his receiving sinners and eating and drinking with them.  Now in studying the Bible I know that Jesus explained why he spoke in parables saying;

Mat 13:34  All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them:
Mat 13:35  That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.

Mar 4:33  And with many such parables spake he the word unto them, as they were able to hear it.
Mar 4:34  But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples.

Luk 8:10  And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand.

Joh 10:6  This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them.

So what is the meaning of the parable of the so called “Prodigal son”?

Let’s see:

There was a certain man

He had two sons

The younger asks the Father for the portion of goods that falleth to him

The Father divided unto THEM his living.

The younger then went to a far country and wasted his substance with riotous living.

When

Real riotous prodigality.

Whenever you forget your first love that beginning love that first look love (my interpretation of a-gape is the Beginning God saw me and loved me and because He loved me so much he was willing to die for me that’s love) that God saw you and loved you so much that He saved you from all inquitiy and you begin to take all his gifts ( a gift being something you don’t deserve but given completely out of love) and begin to under your own strength call your them your own works that is an anti-christ spirit denying the Father and the Son.  Anti-christ says you give me and I’ll give you….The Father gave himself freely and said freely give.  The gift is free out of the gift comes desire for the gift giver to please him and you do that by obedience to His Word.

How far?  The root of far.  He went to the mega country.

After he spent ALL a famine arose and he began to be in want.

So he went and joined himself with a citizen of that country….and the citizen sent him into the fields to feed the swine.

Animadversion is a strong criticism or censorious remark the word has a Latin origin literally meaning to turn the mind around…..like a hog pen….no it was not so much the job it was the hunger and when he realized he was about to eat hog slop he woke up………..

And he would have loved to fill his stomach with the “husks” that the swine did eat……..and no man gave him food

Root of husks

Why is it that outward appearances are easily discerned and judged as being spiritual?  Did God not say it’s not by our own might and power but by His Spirit?    Sometimes I think folks love the hog pen so much they can’t see the slop for the pen.  “church folks just spend, spend, spend and do, do, do until they hit a problem and rise up like Samson not discerning they’ve lost the real power….We all just need to come to ourselves and realize you are what you eat?  These days there is no shortage of people saying this is God’s word but a real famine of those who hear God.  We got a lot of facts but no Truth.  Like people just look at the surface and that’s all they want cause that’s how they see it.  This son who had become a pig feeder and a slop eater had a revelation that he was once a son who father had servants and he remembered how the father treated his servants and decided, “hey I’d rather submit to the father and be a servant” at that moment of repentance he “converted” turned around and went back to the father.  Now he was a servant to the hog pen and now he was willing to remain a servant he was just aware he needed to change masters.

And when he came to himself he began to reason about servanthood in his Father’s house and he made a decision

He’d rather be a servant in his father’s house……

He arose and returned to his Father’s house with a heart to be a servant and repentance for all that he had done saying I have sinned against heaven and before thee I am not worthy to be called thy son..

To be one of Our Fathers family you must understand being a servant.  Submission is easy when you understand the mission is Love who wouldn’t want to be covered in Love.  Problem is the mission we often get under is a lie….conceived in the heart of one who knows real love chose to lift himself up in pride rejecting the love and position in love he was given and now he knows his destiny and misery seems to really want company.  If the adversary could have convinced the son he was a hog simply because he was in a hog pen eating hog food he would have succeeded into evolving a man into a pig.  Why do people think that just because you put a man in a building and get him to eat what the building serves it makes him part of the building?

Many use the prodigal to manipulate folks into staying in church or at home or wherever there’s been hundreds of thousands of conversation on the prodigal…….

If I hadn’t left I would never have known.  More important if my husband the prodigal hadn’t left he would have never found me in his church………….

Recently this prodigal story has been related to the story of Ruth.

The whole family leaving the “house of bread” due to famine and going into Moab and the father dies, two sons die….sounds tragic but when Naomi returned she brought Ruth a Moabite to Bethlehem……Could it be the whole purpose for the trip to Moab was to bring one woman out?

Don’t be so hard on the prodigals after all they took all the Father gave them……….they wasted only the money……the Father’s heart remains and always draws them back.

We are all prodigals on a journey in a far country we mostly waste time and money but the Word of the Father is eternal and will not fail.  When we come to our-self we all realize we need to turn around and willing enter into the Father’s embrace.

The Father loves those who leave and he loves those who stay but at the end of the day the son who left and found himself was a true child….willing to serve……….humbling himself before the Father the Father embraces him and throws the biggest feast ever………..Homecoming day, the angels rejoice and the other son well he was a worker and could not understand grace.

There’s more to this parable than meets the eye.  Why focus on the financial losses and call him a prodigal why not recognize that the scriptures tell us;

Pro 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Well,  this father had two sons and the only difference is one came to himself in a hog pen and one remained dead in the house.  Both had the same Father…………same training, same opportunity, same inheritance…I think the real prodigal stayed home and wasted the true inheritance of the Father.  The son who went to the hog pen came into the real inheritance………When you are willing to serve you are served………..can’t imagine that kind of grace?…trust me it’s AMAZING.

God prepared a table for his own son in the presence of his enemies and the son laid his own life down for the Love of the Father in obedience to the cross endured it all for my sake.  All I’m required to do is to lay down at His feet and say cover me for I am thy handmaid and you are I AM.
